The Rhino Rack cradles, straps and hardware are all good quality and I have no complaints. The only issue I have, and the reason for only a 4 star rating, is the supplied M6 x 40mm Security Head screws are too long for the factory cross bars on my roof rack. When I first installed the cradles if I had tightened the screws all the way, the ends would have dug into the roof and paint, even before I added the weight of the kayak.

In checking, I can purchase some M6 x 25mm Security Head screws from Amazon, but frankly part of me feels that for what I’ve already paid for this kit I shouldn’t have to spend another $15 for the correct length screws, plus the package has 20 screws and I only need 8. However, it appears that is exactly what I will have to do. At least they will be stainless steel, rather than the cheaper material the current screws are. Plus I will have extras for when/if the head strips out.

I would suggest Rhino Rack consider included in their kit two sets of screws to meet this need. Keep the length they have, Judy add a set of 25mm. I’m still happy with the purchase but not 100%. I do like how the kayak slides easily on the rear felt lined cradles. Plus Rhino Rack includes every tie down strap that you will need, e.g. one each for the bow and stern in addition to two straps intended to secure the kayak directly to the roof rack cross bars. I would highly suggest you get in the habit of using all four straps, you really don’t need to have a gust of wind lifting the nose and tearing the roof rack off your vehicle. Can happen! My brother-in-law lost his roof rack exactly in this manner.

So happy yakking and safe travels down the road. By the way I have paired these cradles with the Rhino Rack RTL002 T-Load Hitch Mounted Load Assist and Support Bar for 2” Hitches also purchased from eTrailer.

I’ve attached some photos showing my first and second attempts to solve my dilemma. I need to order the replacement screws. First attempt after dark was a large flat washer, then the next day I added some nuts under the large washer. NOTE: Photos may post in reverse order.

Continues to exceed expectations.

This product was very easy to install. I had it installed in about 15 minutes and my kayak on the roof a few minutes later. The only issue I had was one of the tie-down straps was broken (stitching was not complete or something). Other than that, this product was great! The customer service (Carol and Neil) were great also, helping with the strap problem. Thank you again!

by:

We purchased two sets of these for securing our kayaks to our truck rack so we could tow our travel trailer, fill the truck bed with bikes and still bring the kayaks. They work well once you get them positioned correctly - photo shows one kayak with carriers in place and second kayak waiting for carriers. Our challenge with install is that the kayaks are tow different lengths so carriers are not set the same way. Getting them loaded and unloaded is a two person job, but strapping down is easy and very secure.

While I thought screwing in the bolts with the allen key were a PIA as stated on reviews that I read (surely something better can be devised!) I love the end product. I am 68 and have a carbon lite kayak that weighs about 40 lbs. I chose the use a rear mounting since lifting into a J-Channel is out of the question. I put a rubber backed rug on the back of my SUV and put the front of the kayak on that and then go to the back and lift and slide. The straps are easy to secure and I like the little velcro to hold on to the excess. Even though the directions pictured the mounts over the driver's side, I chose to put the mounts over the passenger side, that way The strap is not in my view and if I need to stop to adjust something, I am not on the road side....safety!!!! I also got the anchor strap that goes under the front hood since I don't have a great place in the front of the SUV to hook on to.

Love my Rhino Rack. Installed myself without complication. Thank you etrailer for great product with the best price!

Thanks for the review Larry. If you dont already have some dont forget to secure the bow and stern of you kayak, as mentioned in Rhino Racks installation instructions. My coworker highly recommends the Malone Quick Lash hood loops # MPG308 for her Kayaks on her Jeep.

Like New. Great quality, fit, and finish.

This carrier is perfect for someone that needs to load and unload a kayak by themselves. Comes with nice straps that won’t scratch your car or your kayak.

by:

Great product, great value and easy installation on my OEM racks for my 2011 Santa Fe GL. Like a few other reviewers, I provision of shorter bolts would be a good idea. I ordered the shorter bolts online and made the suggested swap as well. IMO, This is the Only thing that keeps this product from being a home run. The Saddles seem to be rugged and straps are of phenomenal quality. The email link keeps you well informed on shipping, which only took several days for my order.

A secure, simple and functional kayak carrier. It is just what I was looking for. I wanted one that had the sliding function on the rear pair so I can load my boats from the back of my van. And I wanted a flexible/adjustable triangular shaped carrier for the front two carriers. I love how all 4 carriers are self- adjusting to fit the shape of different kayaks. The carriers attach securely to my Thule square rack and do NOT slide around on my Thule square rack at all. The straps that come with the kit are wonderful. One set has padded buckles, PERFECT! And the other set is great for the front/back ties downs. I like that the Rhino Rack has the added thief-deterrence of a special wrench that must be used to attach/detach the carriers from the car-top rack-a very clever idea. I am glad I purchased this product and look forward to years of service from it.

Hello Rhino Rack Company, I still LOVE the kayak carrying racks that I reviewed above. I am using them a lot and find them to work extremely well. They remain a safe, secure and easy solution for my kayak-carrying needs. I have recommended them to others over a brand that I had previously. Well built and well designed. Thank you so much for inquiring about my long-term satisfaction. I would highly recommend your product. And thanks for the spare wrench key that you sent after I asked for one to replace my lost one.

Installation photo on Hyundai Santa Fe 2011

by:

Works great once you get it installed. Probably took an hour to get all 4 pads adjusted to fit my Hobie Mirage Oasis Tandem. Used it many times and it works like a charm. I can slide my yak up and get it back down by my myself in just a few minutes.

by:

The brackets work great. However the bolts sent to connect the upper and lower brackets for universal bed racks were too short. Had to get new bolts myself to make it work.

by:

I got a Vibe SeaGhost 130 kayak a year ago and needed a rack and and cradle for my 2010 CRV. I settled on the Rhino Rack RSP15 Rhino Sportz rack and paired it with the Rhino Rack NauticSeries 571 cradles. Satisfied with both products. I also purchased the Seattle Sports Sherpack roller from (I think it was) Academy Sports. This nifty roller attaches to the rear window via suction cups and greatly eases (at least for this 65yo) getting the kayak on and off. When putting the kayak on, it's a rather short push up to where the yak is on the rear cradles and, because of the rear cradles' felt lining, I can slide the kayak the rest of the way fairly effortlessly. If I'm not going to be taking the kayak out for a couple of days or so, I remove the rack and use the provided covers for the roof anchor points.

by:

Great. The Rhino track carriers allow me to load the kayak myself with the help of a suction rollover on my back windshield.

by:

I was looking to be able to easily put my sit-in kayak on my SUV roof without lifting the kayak over my head (at 73 I can still do that but who knows what's coming). The Rhino-Rack Nautic Roof Top Kayak Carrier does the job! I did replace the bolts with their anti-theft heads with standard stainless steel bolts to make it easier to mount and remove the rack. I also use a separate roller that attaches to the rear glass to assist in rolling the kayak forward on to the roof rack.

by:

It’s been great, works well and looks great, and is built to last.

by:

I use the rhino roof rack for transporting my 12' kayak. My worry of the boat not sliding over the pads was misplaced. The hull slides just fine, thank you. The tie down straps that were included are first rate. I even try to find other uses for the system just to get more use out of them.

by:

I bought the Rino-Rack , RR571, to replace an old set of Yakima saddles that I gave to my daughter along with my kayak, Yakima bars and towers. I have just recently purchased another kayak and didn’t want to spend the money again for the Yakima saddles so selected the ones from Rino-Rack. They look to be a pretty good product, not as good as the Yakimas but plenty good enough for me. After installing them and loading and unloading several times I find the saddles tend to turn on the round bars even though I have them tightened down as hard as I dare. I ended up boring a small hole through the base into the pipe of the round bars and inserting a half inch No. 8 sheet metal screw. Time will tell if that keeps them from turning. If not I’ll have to try something else. The included straps are first rate and I think the saddles themselves will be fine it’s just the clamping system that I question. They would be fine for any flat, square or oval bars but round bars but round bars are hard to clamp to even though the advertisement states they work on round bars.

by:

These simple but sturdy kayak holders have saved my back from having to lift my 80 lb boats over my head to my my expensive "name Brand" holders. Thanks for making life simpler!

by:

Bought my kayak carrier and roof rack a year ago for my 2016 Infiniti Q50, and it is still performing beautifully. I reinstalled it after removing it for the winter and it was back on in no time. The fit of the rack on to my car and the kayak carrier with my kayak is perfect.

by:

the security screws are hard to work with.
the
brackets slide unless very tight, its plastic rail to plastic bracket - this needs some rubber or silcon (would last longer) or something to make it less likely to move. wind up constantly adjusting for each trip, and with the tool and security screws not something you want to do with the sun pounding down on you. not saying you should do this but I'm going to have to modify these with some silicon material and easier bolts. security wise I'm not too concerned about someone going up and taking them. if they need the money that bad then glad they took that instead of hurting someone for it. also, should add was missing parts. the parts I got did not match... (washer). I had to go to store and buy a bag. No big deal, but did not want to have to run out at last second. good luck.

by:

Use these carriers for a tandem kayak. They make it easy for me to load kayak by myself and the tie down straps are extremely durable, easy to use and keep boat extremely secure. Still very happy with product after one year of use.

by:

I’ve had these kayak carriers for a year now. Very easy install. I take off during the winter months. Happy with ease of use. Makes loading my kayak by myself simple. The covering on the part where the kayak sits is good material to help stabilizer the kayak when it’s loaded wet. I would recommend.

by:

Two sets just arrived and I just opened the box. Got here much earlier than I expected and looks exactly like what I wanted. I'll be using these to transport 2 Kayaks from Pennsylvania to Florida for the month of February. I'll update this post on how well they worked when I get back.

[UPDATE 03/02/17] Sent you a review upon receipt of the Rino Racks and promised a follow up
after I used them.
Just got back from a vacation in Florida, so here goes... Took two
recreational kayaks from Pennsylvania to Florida and back using the Rino
Racks on Rage crossbars. The factory crossbars were not wide enough to
carry two kayaks side-by-side. Note that I have used "J" racks but carrying
the boats flat is much better in the wind, is easier to load and lets me
load "in" the garage.
The Rino Racks worked really well. The racks need to be tightened down hard
to keep from sliding on the crossbar. The bolts are rather unique using an
allen slot with a hole in the center. A wrench with a corresponding hole is
provided.
I didn't use the straps that were included but they looked really sturdy.
Also recommend rope front and rear tie downs instead of straps - the straps
hum unless you twist them.
The racks are a good value and I would recommend them.
Dave

The most economical way to carry a canoe on the roof of your 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback would be to use two of the Darby Turbo-Rack Universal Single-Bar Roof Rack, # DTA968.
